After-builders cleaning: what is involved

After-builders cleaning is the intensive clean that gets a property liveable again after construction or renovation work. The defining challenge is fine construction dust, which settles on every surface, ledge and fitting, and keeps reappearing as it is disturbed. A proper after-builders clean is done in stages, working top to bottom, and is more thorough and time-consuming than a standard deep clean.

Why builders' dust is different

Plaster, sawdust and brick dust are extremely fine and travel everywhere, settling on top of doors, inside cupboards, on light fittings and in every corner. It also resettles after the first clean, which is why after-builders cleaning is staged rather than done in a single pass.

The stages of a post-renovation clean

  1. Debris removal: clear leftover materials, packaging and large debris.
  2. Initial dust removal: work top to bottom, including high ledges and fittings.
  3. Detailed clean: surfaces, skirting, frames, switches, inside cupboards.
  4. Glass and fittings: windows, frames, sills and new fixtures.
  5. Floors last: vacuum thoroughly, then mop, often more than once.

What it covers

  • Removal of dust from every surface, including hidden ledges.
  • Cleaning paint splashes and adhesive residue where safe.
  • Internal windows, frames and sills.
  • New kitchens and bathrooms, inside and out.
  • Floors vacuumed and mopped repeatedly to lift fine dust.

Why it needs a specialist approach

Because the dust is so fine and persistent, an ordinary clean rarely does it justice. After-builders cleaning needs the right equipment and a methodical, staged process to get a genuinely finished result, more like an extreme version of a deep clean.
