Decluttering before a clean: a simple system

Decluttering before you clean makes everything easier: a clear room is far quicker to clean, and stays tidy for longer. The simplest approach is to declutter and clean as two separate steps, work through the home one room and one area at a time, and sort items with a basic keep, bin, donate, relocate system. Doing it this way avoids the overwhelm that makes people give up halfway.

Declutter first, clean second

Trying to declutter and clean at once is slow and frustrating. Clear the clutter first so that when you (or your cleaner) clean, the surfaces and floors are clear. It is also why a quick declutter is the best way to prepare your home for a cleaner.

Work in small areas

Decluttering a whole house at once is overwhelming. Pick one room, then one area within it, a single drawer, shelf or surface, and finish it before moving on. Small, completed wins build momentum.

The four-box system

For each area, sort items into four simple groups:

  • Keep: things you use and want, returned to a proper home.
  • Bin: broken, expired or genuinely useless items.
  • Donate or sell: usable things you no longer need.
  • Relocate: items that belong in another room.

Give everything a home

Clutter builds up when things have nowhere to live. As you keep items, give each a logical home so it is easy to put away. This is what keeps a decluttered room decluttered, rather than slipping back within weeks.

Then bring in the clean

Once an area is decluttered, cleaning it is quick and satisfying. Many people pair a big declutter with a spring clean or an initial deep clean, then keep it up with a regular clean. We cover Derby and the surrounding area whenever you are ready for the clean.
