How often should gutters be cleaned?

Most homes should have their gutters cleaned once or twice a year, with the most important clear-out in autumn after the leaves have fallen. Properties surrounded by trees, or in exposed areas, often need clearing more frequently. Leaving gutters blocked is a false economy, because the water damage they cause costs far more to put right than a routine clean.

Recommended gutter cleaning frequency

Use this as a guide and adjust for your surroundings:

SituationSuggested frequency
Average home, few trees nearbyOnce a year (autumn)
Home surrounded by treesTwice a year or more
After heavy stormsCheck and clear as needed
Commercial or larger roofsTwice a year, on a schedule

Signs your gutters are blocked

Gutters rarely fail without warning. Watch for these tell-tale signs:

  • Water overflowing or pouring over the edge in rain.
  • Plants or grass growing out of the gutter.
  • Staining or damp patches on external walls.
  • Sagging gutters pulling away from the fascia.
  • Pooling water around the base of the house.

Why blocked gutters are a problem

Gutters exist to carry rainwater safely away from your home. When they block, water overflows and runs down the walls, soaks into brickwork and finds its way inside. Over time this leads to damp, rot in fascias and soffits, and even foundation issues. A short, routine clean prevents all of it.

The safest way to clear gutters

For most homes, gutters can be cleared from the ground using a reach-and-vacuum system, which avoids risky ladder work entirely. This is faster, safer and lets the operator inspect the gutters as they go. Our gutter cleaning service uses ground-based equipment to clear leaves, moss and debris and check the downpipes are flowing freely.

Autumn is the key season for exterior maintenance generally. While the gutters are done, it is a good time to tackle the moss on your patio too, before winter sets in.

Once or twice a year for most homes, with the key clean in autumn after leaf fall. Homes surrounded by trees, and commercial roofs, often need clearing more frequently to stay clear.

Blocked gutters overflow, sending water down the walls and into the building. Over time this causes damp, rotten fascias and soffits, and potentially foundation damage, all far costlier than a routine clean.

Not for most homes. Ground-based reach-and-vacuum systems clear gutters safely from below, avoiding ladder work, and let the operator inspect and unblock downpipes as they go.
